Role Overview

Provide company with high-quality, accurate, and timely legal advice and support on all legal risks and legal issues to assist it to achieve its aims in a lawful, effective, ethical and accountable manner.

Provide services to the JVs/ IPPs as assigned by the General Counsel to assist them to function lawfully and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Analysis and Compliance

Manage in-depth legal research activities to identify relevant changes in laws and regulations that could impact the company, its joint ventures, and independent power producers. Provide actionable insights and recommendations for compliance strategies. Lead the implementation of new compliance protocols and guidelines across the organization. Monitor their effectiveness and suggest improvements to ensure continuous adherence to legal standards. Lead regular audits of organizational practices against compliance standards and legal requirements. Identify risk areas and develop mitigation strategies to prevent legal disputes and enhance compliance.

Contract and Document Oversight

Lead and manage the initial drafting and detailed review of various contracts and agreements. Ensure that all documents align with legal and corporate standards before escalating to the General Counsel for final approval. Actively participate in the creation and revision of corporate policies and procedures. Ensure these documents reflect the latest legal requirements and business objectives. Engage in the negotiation of contract terms with partners and suppliers. Ensure favorable terms while maintaining compliance with legal standards and protecting company’s interests.

Litigation & Legal Project Management

Manage the preparation of all documentation required for litigation and dispute resolution processes, including compiling evidence, drafting briefs, and liaising with external counsel. Serve as the primary contact for external legal advisors and services, coordinating all interactions and ensuring that external teams are well-informed and aligned with company's legal strategies. Lead specific legal projects or initiatives as directed by the General Counsel, including managing cross-departmental teams, overseeing timelines, and ensuring deliverables meet strategic goals.

Strategy Formulation, Implementation and Planning

Develop and direct the implementation of the department strategy ensuring alignment to divisional strategy, company’s vision, mission and corporate objectives. Ensure that department strategy and related strategic plans are developed and implemented, which are aligned with the vision and mission of the organisation. Ensure the provision of subject matter expertise for the assigned domain and provide counsel to company's leadership on all related areas to facilitate the achievement of company’s strategy and divisional strategies.

Leadership

Manage the effective achievement of departmental objectives through effective leadership and by setting of individual objectives, managing performance, developing and motivating team to maximise performance. Lead the talent development initiatives for the assigned department, collaborating with discipline experts and thereby ensure the availability of talent to fit business requirements

Budgeting and Financial Performance

Oversee the consolidation and recommend the department budget and monitor financial performance versus the budget so that the business is aware of anticipated costs/revenues, areas of unsatisfactory performance are identified, and potential areas of cost reduction or performance improvement opportunities are capitalised upon.

Policies, Systems, Processes & Procedures

Develop and lead the implementation of department policies, systems, processes, procedures and controls covering all areas of assigned functional area, so that all relevant procedural/legislative requirements are fulfilled while delivering a quality, cost-effective service in a consistent manner.

Change Management

Lead the management of change through continuous improvement of department systems, processes and practices taking into account global standards and changes in the business environment which demand proactive action plans.

Reporting

Ensure that all department reports are prepared timely and accurately and meet company requirements, policies and quality standards.

Key Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business or similar discipline from a reputable university with a preference for the candidates holding an MBA. 12 years of experience in similar roles in large companies, of which at least 5 years are in positions of progressively increasing managerial responsibilities, demonstrating a strong need for effective leadership skills. Demonstrated strategic thinking ability with strong problem solving and decision-making skills. Solid leadership and people management skills. Established understanding of power / energy and water sectors, emerging trends, technologies and key players. A demonstrable track record of working at the highest standards and delivering outstanding results, including managing change and delivering on growth strategies. Proficiency in English (must) and Arabic (significant plus). Excellent relationship building skills. Extensive skills in leading teams from a multi-cultural background. Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Ability to work with key stakeholders, senior executives, management team and external partners/advisors through collaboration & teamwork in a non-hierarchical relationship framework. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Good understanding of Qatar and GCC culture and working environment.
