Job Summary And Purpose
The Fourth Engineer Officer must keep an engine room watch, or, on UMS ships, must act as duty engineer in rotation. He must understudy the Second and Third Engineer Officers and is responsible to the Second Engineer Officer for:
Accountabilities
- The safety of all personnel working under his supervision
- Maintenance as directed
- Maintenance and upkeep of engine room safety equipment.
- Carrying out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Chief Engineer and /or Master
A Junior Engineer is an ex-cadet recently qualified as a Fourth Engineer Officer who may complete a probationary contract prior to full unsupervised OOW duties.

Different types of Pumps, Centrifugal/Rotor dynamic and positive displacement

Engine Water tests
Evaporators – Relationship between temp and pressure, why use Vacuum, Air compressors – Maintenance and overhaul
Experience of managing crew members
Experience with multinational crews
Flashing from cold, purge cycles, testing of Boiler water and associated hazards with incorrect impurity levels.
Importance of weekly routines and equipment tested.
IT experience
L.O Systems and safeties, Fresh water and Jacket cooling requirements
Maintenance of Engines and overhaul of cylinder heads
Ordering spares and Bunkers
Other types of ship’s
Overhaul of Gauge glass
Personal safety, Ship safety & protection of the environment.
Previous Oil major experience
PTW systems, ISM requirements, Risk assessment
Purifiers and Clarifiers – difference between and reasons for heating Fuel/Lub oil prior to entry, Gravity discs
Reasons for testing of Boiler water.
Refit Experience
Safety features associated with Generating equipment
Sewage treatment Plant – Gravity and Vacuum systems
Starting and Paralleling DG /TA
Steam driven and Framo Cargo pumps
Teamwork
Testing of Fuel injectors and correct atomization.
UMS operations. Emergency Generators, EM Fire pump, first start compressor
Written and spoken English to high standard.
