Responsibilities

  • Assess the condition of paper items and develop appropriate conservation treatments based on established principles and practices.
  • Perform conservation procedures, including cleaning, mending, and stabilizing paper artifacts while adhering to ethical standards.
  • Document conservation processes, including detailed reports on treatment methods and materials used, for both internal records and public engagement.
  • Collaborate with curators and other conservation staff to prioritize projects based on the significance and condition of items.
  • Conduct research to stay updated on advancements in conservation materials and techniques.
  • Provide consultations on proper handling, storage, and exhibition of paper artifacts to prevent damage.


Skills

Required and Preferred Qualifications


Required:

  • Bachelor/ Master degree in conservation, art history, or a related field with a focus on paper conservation.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in paper conservation.
  • Strong understanding of conservation ethics and methodologies.
  • Proven proficiency in the use of conservation tools and materials.


Preferred:

  • Experience working with a variety of paper types, including manuscripts, maps, and prints.
  • Familiarity with digital preservation techniques and technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies

  • Deep knowledge of paper chemistry and the impact of environmental factors on paper artifacts.
  • Experience with conservation software for documentation and collection management.
  • Familiarity with archival and preservation standards, including AIC guidelines.
