Purpose:
Responsible for the safe, reliable and cost-effective maintenance and repair of the fleet by effectively planning and managing the workshop resources to maximize efficiency and productivity, in the process ensuring that scheduled work is completed on time and within budget, making do allowance for effectively dealing with the unscheduled work that arises during daily operations.
In meeting this prime objective, full compliance with all company policies and procedures is mandatory with reference to health, safety, environmental legislation and sustainability.
- Vehicle inspection, servicing, and maintenance plans: Ensure vehicle inspection, servicing, and maintenance schedules are current and managed through SAP or the company fleet management system.
- Delivering toolbox talks and team briefings: Conduct regular toolbox talks and team briefings, ensuring all occasions and attendees are documented.
- Monitoring performance of external contractors: Oversee and ensure the quality of work and compliance with vehicle maintenance standards by external contractors.
- Producing engineering cost statements for insurance/warranty recoveries: Prepare accurate engineering cost statements for third-party insurance/warranty recoveries, including documentation of vehicle downtime, labor, and material costs.
- Allocating defects: Assign planned and unplanned defects details to relevant engineering staff and ensure timely remedial action is taken.
- Maintain accurate and compliant vehicle records UpToDate in line with company policies, procedures, and legislation.
- Vehicle component poor performance: Investigate and report the causes of poor vehicle component performance to the engineering manager/director, including full details and implications.
- Lead and motivate the engineering team to maintain high standards of performance, commitment, and motivation.
- Identifying training and development needs: Assess training needs, arrange appropriate training, and encourage knowledge sharing among staff.
- Fostering a culture of continuous improvement: Promote continuous improvement and problem-solving culture within the engineering team, aiming for high diagnostic skills.
- Developing relationships between stores and workshop engineering- Promote cooperation between stores and engineering teams, ensuring the availability of the correct components for scheduled repairs and managing stock levels to match demand.
- Providing cover for the depot engineering manager: Act as a backup for the depot engineering manager, ensuring suitably trained staff are available to cover workshop manager duties.
- Contributing to the effective management of the depot engineering function: Assist in the day-to-day management of the depot engineering function and maintain good relations with operations.
- Maximizing engineering staff productivity: Enhance staff productivity through effective communication, empowerment, self-development, and setting clear individual performance targets.
- Undertaking additional duties as requested by the engineering manager/director: Perform any reasonable additional duties as requested by the engineering manager or director.
- Undertaking training and development activities as requested by the engineering manager/director: Participate in any training and development activities as requested by the engineering manager or director.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
- To always take care of the safety of others by complying with position responsibilities, particularly in relation to health and safety, as outlined in the company policies and procedures and under the relevant health and safety act.
- To report to the engineering manager / director any injury, or any concerns in respect to health and safety issues.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience of at least 5 years in workshop management roles.
- Experience of administrative work
- Knowledge of performance improvement plans and initiatives.
- Computer literate with a broad knowledge of a range of software products
- Knowledge of all the legislation relevant and necessary for running a safe and reliable vehicle fleet and automotive / public transport engineering workshop
- Conversant with the requirements that ensure safe and legally compliant operation of all workshop plant and equipment.
- Must hold or be capable of acquiring a relevant safety qualification, such as IOSH or an equivalent.
