JOB SUMMARY

The Chair - Anesthesiology provides clinical, education, research and executive management leadership in Anesthesiology. S/he is a Clinical and Managerial leader working with the Sidra executive team to develop and deliver strategy and business plans and to be accountable for resources and performance in Anesthesiology and to integrate research and education priorities into a program of excellent clinical service delivery. It is anticipated that the appointed candidate is able to continue with their personal clinical, education and research activities, albeit in a reduced and modified manner.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction and growth of the Department of Anesthesiology as well as its specialties and collaborates on the implementation of strategies to achieve them leading clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the service division.

• Leads clinical service planning, service development and capacity planning for the service division.

  
  

• Provides leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment, retention and recognition of excellent medical staff, and collaborates with the Division Chief to execute those strategies.

  
  

• Recommend clinical privileges, appointment, reappointment and corrective action for each member of the department.

  
  

• Recommends the optimum number of qualified and competent persons to provide care or service.

  
  

• Responsible for all administratively related activities of the department unless otherwise provided by the hospital and serves on all requested committees including the Medical Executive Committee, and appointing such committees as are necessary to conduct the functions of the department.

  
  

• Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.

  
  

• Continues surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the department who have delineated clinical privileges, including performance, including ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations.

  
  

• Continues surveillance of patient care and the professional performance of all individuals in the department who have delineated clinical privileges.

  
  

• Ensures that the staff of the department provides services that are in compliance with all applicable standards and requirements of Joint Commission International (JCI), Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and all other applicable regulatory bodies.

  
  

• Accountable for the financial performance and management of all budgets within the Service Division.

  
  

• Implements the clinical service strategies and business plan for the Service Division.

  
  

• Makes recommendations for the purchase of capital and other equipment and participates in the evaluation of products for use by different members of the Department to ensure their safety and efficacy.

  
  

• Sets and achieves targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement of the quality of care and services provided, and initiates actions for necessary improvements according to Sidra Board initiatives.

  
  

• Works with the Chief Medical Officer to establish and update the work week standards for all physicians on the staff and ensures that there is coverage on a 24/7 basis for all patients including Emergency Department consult coverage.

  
  

• Ensure all members of the Department optimize the use of Electronic Medical Records.

  
  

• Sets and achieves targets for programs and procedures for confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with hospital policy and the privacy laws for State of Qatar.

  
  

• In conjunction with the Chief Medical Officer, ensures the implementation of robust clinical governance structures and processes to ensure patient safety. 

  
  

• In conjunction with the Chief Research Officer and the Division Head of Research, ensures a program of clinical and translational research is developed, promoted and delivered within the Service Division.

  
  

• Ensures there is an active and continuous program of undergraduate teaching within the Service Divisions to ensure an effective learning environment for students, residents and medical staff. 

  
  

• Is actively involved in research, graduate teaching and publication in higher impact referred research journals, advising students and participating in academic services.

  
  

• Ensures effective communication with and involvement of all staff within the Service Division in regard to key decisions and initiatives.

  
  

• Works collaboratively with other Division Chiefs, Chief Officers and Executive Directors to achieve broad Sidra objectives.

  
  

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

• MD, MBBS or equivalent

  
  

• Board Certification in Anesthesiology

  
  

• Subspecialty accreditation/fellowship board in Anesthesiology or recognized equivalent.

  
  

Experience

• 15+ years of clinical experience plus 5+ years of Academic leadership.

  
  

• Experience of leading a large complex organization through significant change

  
  

• Appropriate research/publications and evidence base to practice.

  
  

• Proven experience of partnership working and stakeholder management at the highest levels.

  
  

• Significant experience in building organizational capabilities, including establishing a clear strategic vision and direction and translating into successful outcomes.
