Vice President Aircraft Leasing

About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Finance division as Vice President Aircraft Leasing. This leadership role will be the pivotal point of contact for all of Qatar Airways' lessor negotiations of new or existing lease aircraft. You will be a key contributor to developing business cases, negotiating with suppliers and financiers, and defining contract terms and conditions for aircraft financing with debt and sale & leaseback options, new acquisitions, and retirements. 

Accountabilities:

Strategic:

  • Contribute to Fleet strategy for new, lease (wet, damp and / or dry), and disposal of used aircraft (for sale, lease or tear-down) for the Airline. In so doing, liaise effectively with lessors, and other airlines.  Support prepare related funding commitment documentation and summaries as required for approval by the CFO, GCEO and Board.
  • Identify strategic opportunities to optimize the management of the fleet of the Airline to generate cost savings for the organisation.
  • Influence and Lobby in the Industry by maintaining relationships with Aircraft Appraisers, Industry specific organisation and participating on panels at industry leading conferences.  Stay abreast of industry trends, aircraft manufacturer innovations and issues in the supply market and the Airline’s competitors to identify strategic opportunities related to the Aircraft and/or Engine fleet.
  • Support internal strategic initiatives from cross-functional groups such as Network Planning, Strategic Initiatives, Cargo or Environment and Legal. 

Operational:

  • Contribute to sourcing strategy and campaigns for the acquisition of new aircraft for the Airline. In so doing, liaise effectively with original equipment manufacturers at the airframe and powerplant levels.  Support preparation of funding commitment documentation and summaries as required for approval by the CFO, GCEO and Board.
  • Contribute to negotiations of aircraft contract amendments for purchase and lease of new and used aircraft required by the corporation.
  • Lead negotiations of all matters related to sale, lease, sublease or tear-down with customers for surplus aircraft being sold or leased-out to third parties by the Airline. In so doing, liaise effectively with other airlines, lessors, and original equipment manufacturers, as appropriate.
  • Support negotiations of aircraft financing, particularly when related to sale & leaseback transactions. This includes running scenarios on lease term, rental, End of Lease Compensation (EOLC) rate structure and redelivery condition.
  • Lead negotiations of all lease extensions to ensure terms are aligned to market rates, and meet Fleet Plan requirements.
  • Lead negotiations of all matters related to lessor’s EOLC. This includes running scenario analysis on performing Qualified Maintenance Events (QME) in accordance with lease agreement or negotiating buy-outs, tear-downs and redelivering as-is where-is. This includes pricing options for Engines, APUs and / or components exchanges to reduce the Airline’s cost exposure.    
  • Given his/her expertise in aircraft transactions, contribute to the development and execution of the overall integrated fleet plan for the Airline. Collaboratively working with Corporate Planning, Technical and Business Finance.
  • Maintain professional currency in the field of aircraft transactions and contracts through liaison with appropriate contacts in the marketplace and participation in appropriate conferences, seminars, and training programs.
  • Guide and review the performance of financial evaluations related to all projects undertaken by Fleet Transactions which involve several million dollars of commitments by the corporation.
  • Perform other department duties related to his/her position as directed by the Head of the Department.

Additional Accountabilities:

  • Lead and build a team of  employees in order to build internal specialisation on Aircraft procurement to ensure an adequate succession plan for the organisation.
  • Work closely with professionals across a variety of functions within the area, demonstrating good cross-collaboration and teamwork skills.

Essential:

  • Internationally recognized as a strong contract negotiator, with a proven track-record leading and closing highly beneficial/win-win transactions with commercial aircraft operating lessors on both inbound and outbound transactions.
  • Has led, or actively participated in fleet renewal campaigns for regional, narrow or wide body aircraft.
  • Possess an international network of industry stakeholders to effectively liaise with other airlines, equipment lessors, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)  and financial advisors, within this international aircraft and engine transaction community.
  • Able to work professionally and knowledgeably across internal and external organizational lines (with finance, operations, engineering and network scheduling), demonstrating strong teamwork and communications skills
  • Action-and results-oriented, with strong executive presence, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Strong communication skills and command of English language.
  • Ability to act as a mentor for employees inside and outside the organization.
  • Availability to travel.
  • Managerial skills - Ability to delegate work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train and develop subordinate's skills. Ability to foster teamwork among team members

Preferred:

  • Minimum of 15+ years’ experience in the fleet/aircraft transactions arena in the international airline or airline-related context.
  • Education: Engineering, business, legal or industry related credentials.
