Position Summary
We are looking for a meticulous and knowledgeable Linux Patch Management Specialist to maintain the security and operational integrity of our diverse Linux server estate. You will be responsible for the strategic management of patches across multiple distributions, ensuring minimal disruption to critical services. The role requires a deep understanding of Linux internals, package management, and automated configuration tools.
Key Responsibilities
End-to-End Patching Lifecycle Management:
Manage the complete patching process for 80+ Linux Servers across RHEL/Cent OS 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x.
Schedule and execute patching activities during approved maintenance windows, adhering to strict change control procedures.
Perform thorough pre-deployment testing in a staging environment to assess patch impact.
Package & Repository Management
Manage local YUM/DNF repositories and synchronize with upstream sources.
Differentiate and manage patches from multiple sources (OS vendors, third-party software).
Handle kernel updates and other sensitive packages with appropriate pre-reboot checks and post-reboot validation.
Tooling & Automation
Utilize and maintain patch management tools for Linux (e.g., Red Hat Satellite, Foreman, Ansible Automation Platform, Ubuntu Landscape).
Develop and maintain Ansible playbooks for automated, idempotent patch deployment and system compliance checks.
Integrate patch management processes into CI/CD pipelines where applicable.
Compliance, Security & Reporting
Ensure 100% compliance with security patch mandates within defined timeframes.
Generate detailed reports on patch compliance, system inventory, and remediation history.
Work with the Security team to prioritize patches based on CVSS scores and internal vulnerability scans.
Troubleshooting & Collaboration
Troubleshoot patch deployment failures, dependency issues, and post-patch application failures.
Collaborate with system administrators, Dev Ops, and application teams to coordinate patching schedules that minimize service impact.
Document procedures, known issues, and resolutions for the knowledge base.
Essential
Qualifications & Skills:
3+ years of professional experience in Linux system administration with a focus on patch management.
Expert-level knowledge of RHEL/Cent OS 7/8/9 and their package management systems (YUM, DNF).
Strong, hands-on experience with Ansible for automation.
Proficiency in Bash and Python scripting.
Solid understanding of Linux security fundamentals and kernel parameters.
Desirable
Experience with Red Hat Satellite for lifecycle management.
Knowledge of other distributions (Ubuntu, SUSE) is a plus.
Experience with security compliance frameworks (CIS, STIG).
Relevant certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, Ansible Certified Content).
