DBGS Training Device Database Generation System Specialist/Junior Maintenance Engineer

This vacancy is for a Training Device Database Generation System Specialist/Junior Maintenance Engineer responsible for the creation, maintenance and management of training device visual and synthetic databases. The databases form part of the Typhoon training devices (Full Mission Simulator, Unit Level Trainer and Avionic Part Task Trainer) and their associated sub systems. This role is combined with a Training Device Junior Maintenance Engineer working as part of a small, on-base team performing essential device maintenance activities required to meet customer KPI availability targets and to restore customer serviceability in the shortest timescale possible. The maintenance responsibility will apply to the Typhoon training devices (Full Mission Simulator, Unit Level Trainer and Avionic Part Task Trainer) and their associated sub systems.
  • The DBGS Specialist shall:
  • Create, update and manage Training Device Visual and Synthetic database content in accordance with the Training Device database generation schema and technical procedures.
  • Core activities will include the creation, modification and management from within the database library covering the following content types:
  • Terrain databases including imagery, elevation and vector datasets.
  • Database cultural features including geospecifc features, geotypical features.
  • Complex airfield/airport models including visual and synthetic models.
  • Simulation models including visual and synthetic models for Air, Land and Surface platforms, human characters and more.
  • Aviation datasets including navigational aid and obstacle databases.
  • Data management in line with the Training Device recommended data management process and operational directives.
  • Alignment to mission data scenarios from within the confines of the training device system.
  • Provide On the Job Training (OJT) and familiarisation to junior Database generation engineers as required.
And as part of the Training Device Maintainer Team shall:
  • Perform maintenance in a safe manner in accordance with the documented maintenance procedures.
  • Diagnose faults and perform remove and replace activities in the most time efficient way possible.
  • Update daily and scheduled maintenance log to record all maintenance activities performed.
  • Raise Fault Reports for all items requiring repair or replacement.
  • Update the asset tracker to record the fitting of spares to devices and the location of items requiring repair or replenishment.
  • Follow the repair and replenishment process in accordance with the relevant CONOPS documentation.
  • Follow the tool control process described within the relevant CONOPS documentation.
  • Follow the Query Answering and Fault Investigation process in accordance with the relevant CONOPS documentation.
  • Preparation of Pilot training devices for customer use and assistance with mission specific preparations
Requirements

The candidate would ideally have HNC/HND qualification and a background in synthetic database generation including knowledge and experience in typical industry standard database generation application tool sets such as ESRI ArcGIS, Bluemarble GlobalMapper and Presagis Creator. Alternatively, experience within a creative or computer graphics software role such as game design, graphic design, etc. would be considered.

It is essential the applicant is proficient in general IT systems and is proficient in computer skills including application knowledge of the Microsoft suite, image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and computer graphics software such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya or Blender. Experience and knowledge of configuration control data management principles is also essential.

Also background in simulation systems but this is not essential, as training will be provided. Alternatively, the candidate may have a background in military aviation as a technician from an engineering discipline, preferably Avionics or IT.
