The Applied Research, Innovation and Economic Development Directorate invites applications for the position of Post Doctoral Researcher to work on of the UDST Food Security Project and the research initiatives of the UDST Center of Excellence in Food Security and Sustainability.


Your Commitment


The successful candidate will work on a project funded by QNRF. The title of the project is: A Fault-Tolerant Capacitor-less Power Quality Compensator for Electrical Distribution Systems”. Project #: (NPRP13S-0213-200357). The main area of the projects are:


  • Design and build power electronic converter hardware
  • Design control systems for stable and optimal performance of power converters.
  • Perform real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Perform embedded systems coding (microcontroller, digital signal processors, and field programmable gate arrays FPGAs )
  • Develop different power electronic converters topologies for power quality improvement in distribution network.
  • Perform hardware testing for integrated systems involving different types of power converter topologies
  • Document research findings
  • Write papers for journals and conferences
  • Present on research progress and impact at group meetings, peer review events, and technical conferences
  • Develop new solutions for utility-scale power converters for power quality improvement, energy storage, and other application.


The successful candidates will interact with researchers and stakeholders (local and international collaborators and institutions) with respect to the related project.


Qualifications


The candidates must have a PhD in Electrical Engineering from a renowned university. The potential candidates should have a demonstrated record of scholarship and a track record of excellence in research (at least 5 Q1 journals in the last 3 years). The candidate should have a solid background in applied research and hands-on experience in power converter design, simulation, control, testing, and reliability analysis. Application of artificial intelligence in renewable energy and power systems are also required. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.


Preferable Research Experiences And Skills


  • Significant experience in renewable energy and smart grid
  • Significant hands-on experience in power electronics design, implementation and control.
  • Good hands-on experience in electric vehicles’s motor control, charge controllers design and implementation.
  • Experience in embedded systems, sensors, python for AI application.
  • Experience with dynamic modeling of power systems, microgrids real-time operation and controls.
  • Experience with energy management system software development
  • Understanding and application of reliability and resilience concepts within distribution grids.
  • Experience with energy storage technology and systems
  • Ability to program embedded systems using python and implement AI for different purposes such as classification and predictions of faults in electrical networks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team, excellent engineering analytical and experimental skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a multi-disciplinary research team, and to carry out independent individual research to meet project goals.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills
  • Experiences in scientific writing for preparation of scientific papers for publication and presentations for meetings and/or conferences
  • Outstanding hands-on skills, strong computational and problem-solving skills, and a high level of analytical ability
  • Willingness to cooperate and support other researchers in the research lab
  • Experience in working with teams of engineers and supervising undergraduate students
