About the role:


Summary:

The Data Center Technician is responsible for the setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of data center hardware. This role involves following standard procedures to ensure the proper functioning of equipment, diagnosing issues, replacing faulty components, and adhering to safety protocols. The technician collaborates with the team, communicates effectively, and contributes to a positive work environment. They complete assigned tasks efficiently, meeting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The technician demonstrates accountability, ownership, and a client-focused approach to deliver high-quality data center services.


Required Skills:

  • Hardware Setup and Maintenance: Proficient in preparing, staging, setting up, and performing startups and shutdowns of data center hardware components (e.g., racks, hard drives, switches) following specific instructions and protocols.
  • Troubleshooting: Skilled in diagnosing issues using standard procedures, identifying root causes of problems, and replacing faulty components to minimize disruptions.
  • Quality Assurance: Able to conduct post-execution quality checks, ensuring proper grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling in alignment with safety protocols and deployment standards.
  • Decommissioning: Capable of decommissioning hardware for routine changes and upgrades (e.g., memory upgrades, OS rebuilds) following established procedures.
  • Communication and Reporting: Proficient in communicating incidents, reporting issues, and escalating matters to appropriate management, maintaining clear and concise documentation.
  • Safety Compliance: Knowledgeable about safety protocols, equipment use, and hazard prevention in a data center environment; participates in safety briefings and training.
  • Team Collaboration: Actively contributes to a positive team environment, shares information, attends team meetings, and supports colleagues.
  • Accountability and Ownership: Demonstrates pride and responsibility for service quality, completeness, and user experience, taking ownership of data center facilities.
  • Client Focus: Develops an understanding of the client's business and maintains a client-oriented approach when completing tasks and tickets.
  • Time Management: Efficiently completes assigned tickets while meeting or exceeding established KPIs and SLAs.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn and adapt to changes in procedures, workflow, and technology within the data center environment.


Qualifications and Required Skills Summary:


  • Education: Associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1+ years of hands-on experience working in a data center.
  • Server Hardware Knowledge: Exceptional understanding of server hardware components and various system type failures.
  • Failure Analysis: Ability to assist in conducting failure analysis on field issues to identify root causes and develop solutions.
  • Server Fleet Management: Capable of tracking server fleet health to identify trends, new issues, and ensure customer SLAs are maintained.
  • IPMI Utilization: Proficient in utilizing Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) for diagnostics and management.
  • Software Administration: Skilled in administering software tools, including diagnostics, tests, and firmware updates.
  • Real-time Issue Resolution: Experienced in resolving issues in real-time during deployment execution.
  • Operating Systems: Strong experience in Windows Server OS and WinPE OS administration.
  • Linux Skills: Familiarity with Linux PXE services is a plus.
  • Network Troubleshooting: Ability to troubleshoot network issues at Layer-1, Layer-2, and Layer-3.
  • Scripting: Basic scripting experience in both Linux and Windows environments.
  • Virtualization: Proficient in setting up virtual machines and configuring virtualized environments.
  • Autonomous Work: Ability to work independently or within a geographically dispersed team environment.
  • Certifications: CompTIA A+ or equivalent experience, CompTIA Server+ or equivalent experience, CCENT or equivalent experience.
  • Additional Certifications: CCNA certification preferred, MCP/MSCE certification preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds when necessary.
  • Safely climb ladders as needed.
  • Wear personal protective gear correctly when required.
  • Stand and walk throughout the facility for extended periods without loss of productivity.
  • Perform manual tasks involving handling, control, and adjustments without reduction in productivity.


This role requires a strong foundation in data center operations, server hardware, network troubleshooting, and operating systems. The technician should possess critical thinking skills to analyze failures and trends and be capable of swift issue resolution. Physical fitness and the ability to follow safety protocols are also essential for this position. Certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Server+, CCENT, CCNA, and MCP/MSCE are valuable for showcasing technical expertise.
