Overview

An Associate Dean of Clinical Education is required to lead the design, development and delivery of the clinical program throughout the undergraduate medical program for our CMED students. The Associate Dean of Clinical Education will be a clinically active doctor working at Consultant level in the Hospital or Primary Healthcare Clinic environment, actively engaged in patient care, education and scholarly activities.

BACKGROUND OF THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE (CMED)

The CMED is a newly established college at Qatar University and represents the only national medical college in the state of Qatar. The College implements an innovative integrated, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum, promoting small group and self-directed learning. The language of instruction is English. Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and its affiliated hospitals, and health centres in the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Qatar are the main clinical training facilities of the College.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Associate Dean of Clinical Education will lead the design, development and delivery of the clinical program throughout the undergraduate medical program for our CMED students. He/she will facilitate the clinical teaching of the medical education curriculum within the clinical environments, in support of and in close alignment with the QU Health Director of Clinical Affairs, the CMED Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Head of the Clinical Department at HMC.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development and delivery of the clinical program throughout the MD program
  • Supervise the development and implementation of the Clinical Skills Program in the Pre-Clerkship phase (Phase 2) of the curriculum.
  • Oversee relevant CMED staff, facilities and assets related to the Clinical Skills Program.
  • Provide clinical education advice to CMED faculty involved in Phases 1 and 2 on curriculum, assessment and evaluation.
  • Ensure the organization, implementation, and evaluation of related clinical sciences and skills in all phases of the academic program, in close alignment with the CMED Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  • Represent the clinical program on the CMED curriculum and assessment committees and other relevant committees.
  • Actively create opportunities for early exposure to the clinical environment for CMED students, and facilitate the integration of clinicians as clinical faculty during the Pre-Clerkship phase of the curriculum.
  • Support and work in close alignment with the QU Health Director of Clinical Affairs to ensure the selection of clinical faculty, their appointment, compensation, development and promotion.
  • Facilitating the collaboration with clinical partners and other affiliated institutions of the healthcare delivery system in order to ensure successful implementation of the CMED curriculum in the clinical environment.
  • Collaborate with healthcare delivery institutions to secure the right amount of clinical placement slots for CMED students.
  • Line-manage and supervise the Clerkship directors in the delivery of clinical teaching in the HMC hospitals, Sidra, the PHCC health centres and any other affiliated healthcare providers.
  • Balance the clinical, educational and research responsibilities of clinical faculty.
  • Support, guide, and facilitate student and faculty research conducted in and related to the clinical environment in alignment with the research strategy of Qatar University and CMED, and with regulations of affiliated hospitals and the healthcare system in Qatar.
  • Actively engage in teaching and consulting in academic activities that leads to scholarly achievement with reference to the CMED.
  • Supporting the mission, goals, objectives and activities of QU and complying with all its bylaws, policies, and rules.
  • Report to the Dean of CMED and the Head of the Clinical Department at HMC. Work closely with the Director of Clinical Affairs in QU Health and with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at CMED.

Qualifications And Experience
  • A Medical degree (Essential).
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in Qatar (Essential).
  • Board certification in a medical specialty or equivalent (Essential).
  • Consultant/Senior consultant with a track record of delivery of high quality patient care (Essential)
  • Considerable professional medical experience (10+ years), including administrative/leadership experience (Essential).
  • An active appointment as a full time senior faculty member of the College of Medicine (Essential).
  • Strong demonstrated experience of leadership in medical education at the undergraduate/MD or graduate/postgraduate levels.
  • Demonstrated clinical research experience.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and verbal) is necessary. Proficiency in Arabic is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience and success of working in a similar role in a complex multi-stakeholder environment with cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity on the way to getting enforceable commitments.
  • Track record and interest in clinical teaching and training
  • Evidence of successfully completing a significant leadership role(s) in medical education
  • Experience of having managed a team in the clinical or academic environment
  • Previous experience of having led the development and delivery of an undergraduate medical clinical programme (Desirable)
  • Qualification in teaching and learning, for example, Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters Degree in Clinical Education (Essential)
  • Evidence of having completed a course or courses in teaching and learning (Essential)
Qualifications And Experience

The applicant will meet the requirements for the rank of Clinical Professor based on the applicant’s status in clinical practice, teaching, research and reputation as defined below in the CMED criteria:

Educational Qualification
  • Relevant bachelor degree (MBBS / MD or equivalent)
  • Highest terminal professional post-graduate degree, or other qualifications equivalent to PhD recognized by the university: such as Board Certification and Fellowship.
Research Experience
  • Published at least 15 peer-reviewed papers indexed in PubMed or holding a PhD title plus a minimum of 12 peer-reviewed papers indexed in PubMed.
  • Evidence of scholarly achievements at national /regional and international levels.
Educational experience: At least 8 years teaching experience with medical and/or health sciences students and/or postgraduate students.

Clinical Experience
  • Has at least 10 years of post-specialization experience “post highest professional degree”.
  • A minimum of 6 years as a consultant with evidence of providing excellent clinical care.
Reputation: Strong regional reputation and preferably international reputation with excellence in clinical experience, education and scholarly productivity.

OVERSIGHT

The Associate Dean of Clinical Education reports directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine and to the HMC Head of Clinical Department. Guidance from and collaboration with the QU Health Director of Clinical Affairs is expected for professional matters and for administrative affairs. For the academic program, close collaboration with the CMED Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is expected. The Associate Dean of Clinical Education reports to the Chair of the relevant clinical department or designated authority for their clinical duties.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The Associate Dean of Clinical Education will manage the Clinical Skills team at CMED and the Faculty member for Family Medicine (new post). He/ she will manage the education activities of the Specialty and Site Clerkship Directors and Associate Clerkship Directors. General supervision will be exercised over Clinical and other professional/administrative and office staff, including the appointed CMED clinical and honorary faculty.
